Emperor Caligula was famous for all manner of building works. These included two large ships he constructed with beautiful decoration. They were found at the bottom of Lake Nemi in the early twentieth century. They were some of the largest ships ever found in the ancient world and were lavish in their construction. They were essentially large floating palaces. German bombers destroyed the rescued ships during world war two, only thirteen years after they were recovered.
